Nationally Recognised Training for Business

Apprenticeships have long been an effective way of supporting people to learn and develop in their early careers, and Skill Up London is continuing this tradition within the framework of the Apprenticeship programme.

The level and complexity of training varies according to the particular needs of the learner, and adapts to recognise the diverse range of needs according to the learner's age, background and prior experience. Alongside the technical knowledge covered in each vocational course, there is an emphasis on key skills to develop the ‘softer skills’ needed to succeed at work, including effective communication and numeracy.

Course Principles
Apprenticeships are achieved by completing a framework of qualifications set down by the Sector Skills Council responsible for a particular field of employment. Each area is slightly different depending on the requirements of the Sector Skills Council but all will include an NVQ, a Technical Certificate and at least two Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number.

An emphasis is also placed on developing the Apprentice's understanding of the fundamental expectations of employers in terms of punctuality, consistency, time management etc.  Any specific areas of development identified by employers can be incorporated into the programme as requested. Skill Up London offer Apprenticeships in the following areas:

• Business & Administration
• Community Justice
• Health & Social Care
• IT
• Customer Care

Employers that wish to train their staff in areas not covered by the above are encouraged to discuss their needs with Skill Up London.

Progression
Apprenticeships operate at NVQ Level 2 and Level 3. Typically, a Level 2 qualification takes one year to complete successfully, and a Level 3 takes up to two years.  Level 2 is often, but not necessarily, the starting point for a young Apprentice.  Apprenticeships at Level 3 offer a clear progression route for learners, offering a greater level of complexity in their vocational area and further opportunities for both career and personal development.
