Teaching and Learning

Skill Up London offers a wide range of courses, from Floristry to Business Management, many of which are featured here as video clips. Teaching and learning takes place at Southwark College's three sites and, increasingly, is offered as NVQs or bespoke courses in the workplace.

Kay Singleton, Head of the School of Applied Health & Care, talks about what her School can offer, including Counselling, Sports and Hospital Play, all featured below.

Counselling: We offer a number of Counselling courses at our Bermondsey Centre, including introduction and intermediate level courses, which benefit individuals who want to gain counselling skills to help and support others in a voluntary or employed capacity. There is a Diploma course for advanced students who wish to pursue professional training as a counsellor. Our counselling department can also provide in-house tailor made one day courses to suit the needs of your organisation or agency. In these clips you can meet our counselling Coordinator Austin Pacitto and three of our counselling students talking about their experiences: Grace Connor, Yinka Bakade and Barbra Williams.

Hospital Play (Renamed: Specialised Play BTEC Professional Diploma): On this course learners study the role and value of play in a therapeutic setting and hospitalisation issues for children. Learners are either employed in a hospital or do 190 hours in a hospital placement. The course is conducted through guest speakers, videos, lectures, discussion groups and visits. It explores child developmental and play patterns from birth to adolescence, children with special needs and the provision, organisation and management of play for children in hospitals. Shirley Ino Baptiste and Lesley Wilson two of our Hospital Play Tutors talk about the course and some of our hospital play students share their experiences on these clips: Lucy Jones & Jeanne Crow and Donna Day & Janine Scott.

Sports: We have some great sports facilities at our Bermondsey Centre where you can study practical coaching, anatomy and physiology, science, maths, health and fitness, sports marketing and administration, outdoor education, biomechanics, information technology, sports injuries and nutrition. In these clips you can meet Simon Thorpe, one of our sports tutors and two students, Liam & Robert, talking about their experience at the college.

Our School of Art and Design offers a range of Art and Design evening and daytime courses, from Life Drawing to Illustrator. Here Fiona Kreizman, Head of School, Art and Design gives a full overview of what's on offer.

In our School of Customer Service we offer a whole range of courses for adult learners, including:

Travel and Tourism: Our Travel and Tourism courses are taught by qualified teachers who have vast amounts of experience within the field and will provide you with the fundamental knowledge and understanding of the aviation industry. Whilst studying you will have access to advance aviation facilities and have a hands-on experience with real life situations that occur in the world of aviation.  Your tutors will also assist you in securing useful contacts with potential employers within the industry. Many of our Travel and Tourism courses provide opportunities for visits, work experience and even overseas travel. In these clips you can meet Marie Natasha Mooruth our cabin crew tutor and two of our cabin crew students talking about their experiences: Cameil Finniken and Gertrude Ravina.

Floristry: Our highly regarded floristry courses are taught by experienced, professional, friendly tutors and are ideally located at our well-equipped floristry studios in the Waterloo Centre. We have excellent links with employers and our students often progress into employment and higher level courses. Hospitality: We have catering and hospitality courses suitable for both adult and young learners who want to gain hands-on experience and skills working in restaurants and kitchens. We also offer short courses in Food Safety and Health & Safety. Our extensive range of facilities are situated in our Bermondsey Centre. Here we have clips of three members of staff: Philip Seaman - Curriculum Manager, Mark McGlinchey and Nicola Nicolaou - Hospitality Lecturers and one of our adult hospitality learners Janet Sergean.

Our School of Commerce offers adult courses ranging from IT to Business management. 

Business Management: Here you can view a clip of Eric Addae Kyeremeh, our Head of School of Commerce and tutor on the Level 3 Certificate in Management. Eric has recieved some great feedback on his courses (link to feedback charts - PDF document) and here are two clips showing some of his satisfied students: Vikki Rose Brown and Magdalena Falisz

Our School of Inclusive Learning offers a range of Life Skills courses including:

Sign Language: Courses are suitable for anyone with an interest in learning British Sign Language and cover BSL grammar, sign language communication tactics and basic everyday communication with deaf people who use sign as their preferred language. Penny Beschizza is our British Sign Language tutor.

The School of Engineering has courses ranging from Electrical & Sustainable Energy to Web Design.

Web Design: We have webdesign courses suitable for adults who want to learn how to build their own website using HTML. Studying in our well-equipped computer centre in Bermondsey, students find it easily accessible from South and Central London. Ziad Bouji is Curriculum Manager, Engineering and also teaches on the Web design course featured here on these clips.
